Decentralized Subjects

In today's society, people focus on themselves and distant matters while overlooking things around them. We should reconstruct the concept of "nearby."

From the inception of the project, we were intrigued by the development model of V-town. They develop individual buildings in urban villages in a time-shared and dispersed manner, gradually expanding and extending. The standardized design of the apartment buildings creates a unified image, utilizing the ground floor of each building as communal space. As the number of buildings increases, the number of managed apartments and communal space also grows. This flexible and elastic development model provides a crucial sample for bottom-up architectural planning, offering new possibilities for spatial governance in urban villages.

This project is to design a showroom for V-town , and we aiming to extend its internal logic.

Part 1

Internal Structure

The project is located in Yuanfen Xincun, Longhua, Shenzhen, Similar to most urban villages in Shenzhen, the village layout resembles a grid . The V-town apartments dispersed throughout the village, form a spatial network connecting through streets and alleys, providing residents with access to communal spaces within walking distance. We define this spatial organization model as the prototype for the V-town showroom.

Like other communal space, the V-town showroom also makes use the ground floor . Due to the limited area on the ground floor of each building , the showroom requires the combined ground floor areas of three adjacent buildings. The proprietor ultimately selected three nearby buildings as the site for the showroom, offering an opportunity for our design concept.

We need to connect the three dispersed sites through streets and alleys to form the showroom, and the flow of visiting will transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. The showroom experience mirrors a microcosm of the V-town community.

Part 2

A Showroom for the Community

Upon visiting the site, it became clear that creating a showroom here necessitates coexistence with the vibrant local atmosphere. Amidst the bustling crowds in the streets, the elders gathered in the square, and vehicles filling the remaining public spaces of the urban village, setting up a showroom in this chaotic environment should not establish a strong opposition to the surroundings. Instead, we propose inserting dispersed segments into the environment, fostering a "coexistence" relationship.

Understanding the operational needs of the showroom from the proprietor, we learned that the V-town showroom is not open to the public on a daily basis but primarily caters to scheduled group visits. To establish a connection and interaction between the showroom and community life, we envisioned a setup allowing the showroom to be visible externally, with segments viewable from the surrounding streets and alleys.

As a result, the showroom offer two forms of viewing: the interior is for the official visiting and external for the surrounding community.

Generation of Form

Conceptual analysis : display windows dispersed in the street ©URBAN NoMAD

This concept directly guided the gradual establishment of the showroom form: individual display windows dispersed throughout the streets and alleys of the urban village.

To realize these windows, a major concern was the on-site conditions with numerous immovable pipelines on the building facades. After documenting the on-site situation, we chose to use external volumes. New volumes, varying in size, attach to the existing building facades, appearing in the alleys or at corners. Combined with the setup of doors and windows, they form different display windows.

The facades of the new volumes use perforated aluminum panels, revealing the chaotic pipelines on the original facades after unifying paint, creating a historical fabric under the lighting.

Part 4

后记

Postscript

Due to the impact of the COVID-19 ,we returned to the site more than a year after the project was completed. The atmosphere of community life remains strong, with crowds gathered in the square and streets filled with motorcycles. The showroom retreats into the background of these daily activities. However, passersby in the streets and alleys can always catch a glimpse of the display windows. These fragmented pieces of the showroom constitute a relatively unique part of their community life. When someone becomes interested in these windows, they can stop and take a closer look...

The showroom appears in a dispersed form in the street ©URBAN NoMAD

Perhaps this is our greatest expectation for this project: to integrate into the environment in a dispersed form, allowing people living nearby to have a more routine connection and understanding of the V-town showroom. In the current community of strangers, through humanistic spatial operations, the showroom may make people feel the care of the V-town community and relatively easily establish a sense of belonging. For surrounding residents who are not part of the V-town, the open and inclusive attitude may help eliminate psychological biases towards the V-town community, as it is not an unknown and distant group but a humanistic community nearby.
